Of the highest rarity, the better of two known
Lot 269
IONIA. Magnesia ad Maeandrum. Circa 465-400 BC. Tetrobol (Silver, 15 mm, 2.14 g, 3 h). Male figure standing front, head to left, leading with his right arm a horse standing facing to left, head to right. Rev. Eagle flying to right; around, uncertain letters (?). Unpublished, but cf. CNG 72 (2006), 733 (trihemiobol, described as 'obol') and Savoca Online Auction 17 (2017), 198 (same dies). Of the highest rarity, the better of two known. Slightly porous, otherwise, very fine.

CNG attributes this issue to 'Themistokles (?)', stating that it fits well into the coinage of Themistokles and Archepolis as described by Nollé and Wenniger. However, the letters on our example do not resemble the monograms of Themistokles or Archepolis, and the lack of a dotted square border and the style of the eagle point, in this cataloguer's opinion, to a somewhat later date. It is, in any case, a highly interesting issue and certainly worthy of further research
